Many Women Injured After Using NuvaRing Birth Control

ImageDozens of patients or their families have filed lawsuits after they were injured while using the NuvaRing birth control device. These NuvaRing lawsuits have alleged that the birth control ring caused them to develop blood clots which led to a pulmonary embolism, amputation or death.

Organon USA, the manufacturer of NuvaRing, began selling the birth control ring in July 2002. The device was intended as a birth control alternative to other products such as birth control pills or the Ortho Evra patch.

Because the NuvaRing is inserted into the vagina and left in place for 21 days, using the device may make it easier for women to consistently use their birth control without having to remember to take a daily pill.

NuvaRing was marketed as a safe alternative to the Ortho Evra patch because it releases a much lower dose of estrogen and progestin than the birth control patch.

However, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, birth control products containing the type of progestin used in the NuvaRing may increase the risk of serious blood clots by as much as 180% compared with older, safer forms of birth control.

This could place women who use the birth control ring at an increase risk of serious NuvaRing side effects, including heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism or death.

The labeling for the NuvaRing warns that patients may face as much as 11-times the risk of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis compared with non-users and up to six-times the risk of heart attack.

Women may also face an increased risk of high blood pressure; cardiovascular disease; breast, uterine or cervical cancer or other NuvaRing side effects by using the vaginal ring.
